1)Archibald2012 2)Wash(wine drops)

Hi, Friends, I sketched Archibald 2012, the most prestigious portrait competition in Australia. Here, NSW Gallery entrance.

None of watercolour work was in. Most finalists' paintings were oil or acrylics. "John Yu With Artist" (Jun Chen) caught my eyes, as the colour "green" used in the face and the strong brush strokes fascinated me.
You can guess how huge paintings were. It was the main stream. But I'll keep my own style.

The other day, I sketched a psychologist and popular writer, Hugh McKay at his book launch. Although the work size is A4, I'm happy with it. That's the point! "Be what I am most."
OK, as promised, I'm loosening up landscape with washes. We saw the huge rainbow over City from a hospital after a heavy shower. Beautiful and full of hope!
I've begun to get how to loosen up. Only the problem is landscape does not move around that bores me so much. No joke. I love capturing movements.

Now, another wash experiment, wine "drops" for watercolour! Does anyone have left wine in a kitchen? If so, this technique is yours!
Quite an interesting outcome. I'm thinking, for what sort of subject l'll use this technique. Fun!!
To learn new techniques and master them takes time. I want to take in new skills and enrich myself.

Although this post seems to have too many topics, what I tell myself is "Be what I am most." I do not need to be someone else, but myself fully. Even without a signature, my work should tell who made it -- Sadami. So, I explore skills and will be what I am. Tonight, I'll enjoy a life drawing class.
Friends, Happy Painting!!

    1. Uhahahahaha! Jane, I love your humour!!!
I should try your idea to excite me with landscapes. BTW, I've been searching for a model, as A subject is, preferably, "famous." So, often big names in mass media.
I can hardly find a big name for my model. The quote from the entry form is below.
“preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in Art, Letters, Science or Politics, painted by any artist resident in Australasia during the 12 months preceding the date fixed by the Trustees for sending in the Pictures.”
Wish me good luck to find a model.
      Cheers, Sadami

  2. As one who has been exploring my own skills, I fully understand and applaud your pursuit of your true self. At least, you've settled down to one medium, I am still floundering between water base and oil base paints. Be happy in your quest Sadami. I'm glad to see your hand is as good as ever.

    1. Hi, Linda,
Thank you so much. Hope you'll find your favorite media. As far as I know the tips of watercolour is "Not to put too much." "The least, the best" is my favorite. Work on your style.
The hand will get well completely in time.

  3. Yes Sadami! You are yourself and that's what I LOVE about your blog and your paintings. :) It's a shame that watercolors rarely make it in to competitions like that. But I do really love your fresh paintings in this post. Especially the top one. :) That red is beautiful!

No, I haven't tried coffee--probably, I won't, as I love coffee so much, hahaha. Regarding an "upward angle," veiwers' feedback is very positive. So, maybe, one day, I'll upload many upward angle work.

  6. Hi Sadami!!!
Lovely to see your watercolour sketches! I used to love going to the archibald prize every year (i have been overseas for over a year now) - I am surprised, did they let you paint inside the exhibition? Usually they are so over-protective!

As a fellow watercolour painter, it's sad there weren't any in that technique this year. Oh well, maybe next year!!

Also, the wine is a very interesting idea! Did you read about this technique somewhere, or did it come about as an "accident" ? I wonder how colour fast it is, whether it yellows the paper or not... I like it, I might have to try too!

Try every direction in limitaion. You'll find the unlimited potential.
Regarding sketching in Gallery, again, try your luck ʚ(ˆ◡ˆ)ɞ.
Wine is my idea. In our net community, wash techniques get polular for these years and we are learning each other. Keep an eye on other wonderful blogs and check their techniques.

  11. I had to smile reading your comment about landscapes boring you because they don't move, it might be just like that when you're so used to draw people and animals on the move all the time. For what it worths I'll say that the one you posted here with the rainbow and that expressive greenery reads Sadami all around, you're already conquering it dear! keep on going, you rule!

    Teresa さんのYou rule!

    1. Hi, HaniHani,
You're a strong woman," と言われます。
      実はその"what I was, what I have been, who I am. who I will be," を求めて大学へ入ったの。

Emotion and joy comes first.

Go, go, HaniHani~~~!!!

      Cheers, Sadami

  16. Another good post full of positive thought and beautiful paintings! I love the painting of the exhibit, especially how you handled the people looking at the painting. Here, in the US, watercolorists are often passed over and many of them paint so much better than the ones who are accepted.
I'm tuned in to see what you paint next. There is nothing you can't paint!

Thank you! I love sketching people. But many watercolour portraitists are very successful in the States such as (my favorite and admiring) Mary White and Burton Silverman. I want to try Archibald and have been searching for a model=needs to be a big name. Hardly get yes. Wish me good luck.

  18. Oh, yes, difficult to compete for watercolor with oil or acrylic, but I feel that slowly is making inroads into recognition. It is not easy but sometimes watercolors have been awarded against oils. But that should not worry, we do what we like, enjoy, and that's the best. Wonderful all work, good tip on the wine, the city moving in the rainbow, portraits, museum ... great!
    Kisses and smiles;)
