eBooks at Library

Hi, Friends, did you have a nice weekend?
This week, my topic is an "eBook," an electronic version of a printed book. The other day, I attended the ebook and audiobook workshop at a public library.

Very interesting. The audience were middle age and elder people who access internet and have time and budget.
I asked a librarian to show the children's section on a catalogue. Not many, some children picture books are available. Most of them are simple ones such as counting, alphabets and animals' names or picture books published long time ago. Neither famous nor popular picture book is found.

Sadly, digitalized information has already caused problems. First, copyrights issues are serious. Second, already ebooks have been stolen from a library.  "Some publishers won't do e book at all," a librarian said. I see. "In this digital era, once, information becomes available on net, copyrights do not exist," a uni lecturer told us in the sociology unit, "The impact of modern technology on our lives." So true.

It seems that digitalized books and related issues will take more time to settle down.

Apart from eBooks problems, I have so sweet memories with parents in reading books together in the evening. On bed, we shared time. Isn't it our starting point to meet books? So, I still now love a library's "story time" and join it.
Today, whether printed books or eBooks, I sincerely hope parents or care givers will have reading time with children. Children will remember wonderful moments forever.

Lastly, I'd say special thanks for librarians, backstage players. They are very hard workers, so patient and very caring. You're the real heros!! Yey!  We, picture book illustrators and authors often visit libraries for a book launch and do a regular presentation. In this "National Year of Reading," libraries have many events related to books.
Let us enjoy reading and share joy with others, too.

Friends, Happy Painting...and reading, too!!

  1. Dear Sadami , I love both books, printed and ebook! I come from a family that made me love books, I married a man who reads and now I have a daughter and a son-in-law that are piling up books in their library.
My granddaughter(22 months old) has books of cloth for sleeping, , plastic for bath, and cardboard to play.
None of us live without books.I also read on the computer but nothing compares to the real book!
The work of illustrators complete printing so wonderful! The joy in the eyes of my little Beatrice in front of picture books bodes well for the future! I think anyone who loves read , advantage of every new technology, but the book is better on the library shelf
rather than in the cloud technology!
You touched a very interesting topic ...
    Warm regards
    Rita

    1. Dear Rita,
Thank you very much! You're having so wonderful time in family with books. Oh, how cute the granddaughter is!
Yes, literacy is important like you say, but also a very big number of people are living without literacy -- I've studied the reality in linguistics. So, UNESCO and each country struggle to decrease illiteracy that directly impacts on life skills. Rita, on the earth, some people do not know what a book is. So, last year, the picture book, "Look! A Book!" (Libby Gleeson and Freya Blackwood) was published to show how to care for/read a book.
I actually joined the event for fundaising for indigenous children literacy. http://sadamisgraffiti.blogspot.com.au/2012/06/one-word-one-day-fundrasing-for.html
I hope we, picture book illustrator can work to improve literacy.
      Kind regards, Sadami

      Cordialement, Sadami

      Hi, Lydie,
Thank you so much! You've been a book warm all though life!! Me, too love Perrault's work such as Le Petit Chaperon rouge (Little Red Riding Hood), Cendrillon (Cinderella), Le Chat Botté (Puss in Boots) and La Barbe bleue (Bluebeard). **I was a very biig fan of French literature.
Like you said, a book takes us to anywhere.
Enjoy your holiday with a book!!
      Kind regards, Sadami

Child I devoured the books, up to hide under the covers with a flashlight to continue my reading and my parents thought I was sleeping quietly. My first memories are of illustrated books of Perrault's tales.
Now I always bring on vacation, leaving me transported into another world.
I'll see you in September after a short break summer kisses.

    1. Estimado Onera,
¡Gracias! Sí, yo también. Pero tarde o temprano, la falta de árboles hará que los seres humanos a renunciar a los libros impresos? De todos modos, vamos a disfrutar de la lectura y la pintura!
      Un abrazo, Sadami

      Dear Onera,
Thank you! Yes, me, too. But sooner or later, the lack of trees will make human beings to give up printed books?! Anyway, let us enjoy reading and painting!
      A hug, Sadami

Hi Sadami. Just love your imagination with your paintings here. As to books vs ebooks, I like and use both but nothing will replace holding a book in my hands and turning the pages. My son was 8 months old when I introduced him to books. Now at 19 sadly he and his peers love ebooks but so long as they are reading I'm thankful for that. Take care. Laura x

    1. Dear Laura,
Thank you very much and so sorry, accidently I have deleted your comment, but have the content.
You're really a lovely mom for your son! I'm sure he will remember the old books and the sweet memories with you. BTW, from an enviromental aspect, in order to save trees, eBooks might take over printed ones one day.
You, too, take care and have a wonderful week!
      Kind regards, Sadami

  10. Two more magnificent portraits! I just love the man's face. It's funny. I just glanced up at renate's comment, and it's true: I always used to have a book in my hand. Always. But when I began sketching in public, if I brought a book, I wouldn't sketch. I would read. So now my reading has been greatly limited. I use all spare moments for art (and this darned internet!). But you will be happy to know that I now have a Nook, and it hasn't made it any easier for me to read again!

    1. Hi, Dan,
Thank you very much! The man was, indeed, our uni, Sydney uni's professor did a short public lecture on the library's history. Oh, "Nook"! I see. Yeah, I totally understand what you mean in the comment. I used to be a great book worm. BUT today, I move a hand for a brsuh rather than for a page. Dan, life is short. I've chosen a brush and very happy. Happy painting!!
