Leigh Memorial, Historical Architecture in Parramatta

I'm searching for my own style in architecture drawing. I'd really appreciate your feedback on different approaches : "traditional vs loose." Leigh Memorial is a Victorian Gothic church opened in 1885. Today, it's Uniting church in Parramatta. This historical and very charming architecture elegantly stands opposite to Parramatta Artists Studios on Macquarie St.

A first image is created by a traditional methods. The church building has unified colours on it. My paints have come together well. The colour of a shadow seems fit to the architecture. I really enjoyed drawing. Street walkers often talked to me. Thanks for cheers, pedestraians!
The black and white is below. In the colour work, added people show a scale of the building and something humane.
A loose image is below. In fact, I had done it earlier than the work created by a traditional drawing methods. I enjoyed colours in a quick way. But my eyes have told that the building was too thin. So, I made the building stout in the first image. I tried Leigh Memorial for several times. The more, I draw, the more, I learn. What do you think about these two different modes?
In my eyes, the drawing of architecture, itself, is not so complicated, as long as my eyes capture a building as a "mass" and chunk it down in a simple 3D way. A headache is architecture demands preciseness in drawing. Of course, there are many artists who cook architectures by their unique styles. Produced architectures taste good and so beautiful, which very much interests me!

I need more time to learn how I loose up architectures/landscapes or try other drawing methods. Practice gives me answers. I'm very proud of messed up papers!
Btw, we're getting into autumn. It was very cold today. What about your area? Take care.
Friends, Happy Painting!

  1. I think I prefer the top, more controlled, version, Sadami. For some reason, I just like clean crisp colors and lines on architecture - but not on other things! ha ha I like them both but love that pinkish color you came up with for the bricks on the top one, too :) Rain today for Mother's Day but nothing planned outside - it's chilly at 65F only here. Typical rainy weather for May (and April, too).

    1. Thank u, Rhonda! You have good eyes. Yeah, I made a pinkish cololur. The real colours are different. We, artists are privileged to tell a white lie or to change a world as we like. We have rain, too and smoke in Sydney basin. Take care and enjoy your life! Best wishes, Sadami

  4. Amiga Sadami, no busques tanto tu estilo urbano... que ya lo has encontrado!!! Hace tiempo que descubrí que dibujabas y pintabas muy bien los monumentos arquitectónicos. No puedo criticar nada!!

Sadami friend, do not look both your urban style ... you've already found !!! Some time ago I discovered that you painted well were drawing and architectural monuments. I can not fault anything !! The outlook, which is essential in this type of drawing, are fine. It's what makes her look in relief (3D)
In the initial drawing and watercolor fast, you just have to highlight the volumes and without full details. That is quite complicated. It is as if close your eyes ... in a few minutes, the open and close them again. You are recorded in imagination, only volumes and colors, highlighting shadows and highlights. Well, that's what you need to paint.
Forgive me for writing so much.
      A hug.

  5. Dear Sadami like both styles. Putting the figures in does give one a sense of size. You are exceptional in capturing a place in the first one and then a feeling in the second. Both ate super. Sorry it is cold- we are chilly today too. Have a super week. Hugs!

    1. Thank you so much, Debby! That's a good and flexible idea to have both styles like you said. I'll have many styles and use them so to fit to a context or required work. Btw, today, it's very windy and a clear up sky we have. You, too, have a creative week. ((Hugs)) Sadami

  6. Hi Sadami, I like both styles! Architecture in a loose style seems very difficult to me, because of the straight lines. I follow on facebook a wonderful Dutch watercolorist Edo Hannema, who paints mostly landscapes. You can see his work here: http://www.edohannema.nl/wordpress/watercolors-4/

    1. Thank you very much, caring Judy! I checked Edo. He does lovely work. Judy, I know a very successful artist of architecture in sketches. People say "Buildings are dancing" in his work and so colourful. Uniqueness and originality are our goals, aren't they! That's what I've been seeking for. I'll keep on checking Edo, too. I so much appreciate your kindness.
      Best wishes, Sadami
