May peace be on the earth

Merry Christmas. This small chapel is next to a hospital. My work is prayer dedicated for people separated from their loved people. Hope suffering people will find the meaning in suffering. May peace be on the earth. Thank you for your strong support for this year!

The beauty of the world is the beauty as you see it

The title is what my friend told me. Wow, that's so true, I feel. In my eyes, people are the most  beautiful subjects. Find out the beauty of a person and express it in work -- is my mission. In a technical aspect, a huge part of drawing ability is the ability to see a subject like I wrote in "Talent can be learned. The skills of "see" is to define relationships in a subject such as values, colours, perspective, proportions, volumes, shapes, edges and so on. Apart from physical relationships, a subject has a mood and a person has emotions, too. From them, I pick up one topic and focus on it.
For example, a mood, the tenderness of an old pastor interested me most as well as colours, his white cloth and a stole.
Drawing and painting skills are much like interpretation skills of the identified relationships in a subject. How can we interpret the picked up visual information by what? Methods is up to an individual's choice and decision such as medium and a style. We can try tens of thousands of different ways.

Moreover, drawing skills are often equal to a painting ability/skill. So, I always keep up drawing. When I wonder how to paint a drawing, I always get back to black and white drawing like initial sketches. Then, I get on painting.
It was nice to pop up a church service. I could have a rich meditation..., or simply a naughty girl?! I wish to depict any walks in ordinary people's ordinary lives. I want to draw people from all walks of life. It's up to our eyes to find beauty.
Friends, Happy Painting!

Keep It Simple

"If I create from the heart, nearly everything works; if from the head, almost nothing." -- Marc Chargall.
Idealism though, my favourite quote. In my eyes, some works are technically not so sophisticated, but they well talk to viewers and will remain in our heart. Take examples of the paintings created by young children and people with disability. Some are striking and moving. The same is true of the opposite case. Technically, some work could be spectacular, but they perish from our memory in a few minutes. A Japanese proverb, "仏作って霊入れず," means "a sculptor forgot putting a soul into a Buddha statue."
When I get stuck in creating work, I ask myself and go back to a very basic original motivation, "Why do I draw it?" The simpler, the stronger a motivation is. A naive desire, "I want to draw it!" bears time and will get through difficulty. I encountered the quick sketches of moving people in an art magazine in my teenage. It was sensational and very fresh. The ordinary people in sketches were spontaneous and lively. How beautiful...! I felt. I wished to describe all walks in ordinary people's ordinary life. Technically, I determined to capture moving people like those sketches. Imagine, my real drawing skills were far behind the goal at that time.

But the thirstiness was so strong. Technical things and knowledge will follow an enthusiastic pursuer in art. After school, I diligently studied human anatomy, learned about materials and kept sketching in anywhere for years... and to the present. To gain drawing skills is a painstakingly time consuming process. My strength "love of drawing," compensated a painful practice. The zeal has filled the gap between the poor drawing skills at my starting point and a current produced/ing art level. When I closely look at my motivation, I can trace it back to a childhood.

To keep the high ground is not easy that demands a huge energy in a longitudinal work such as big size paintings and picture book illustration. They are equal to an incessant process of personal growth. A new horizon comes up after a horizon in my art journey. I cannot rest in labour, want to move on and enjoy challenge. I want to learn lots more. Yes, I'm hungry in a healthy manner.

I keep my way simple and be careful not to get blinded by technical things too much. I hope people will feel heart in my work. I want to depict the inner world of a person in figures.
What do you want to do in drawing this year? Let's enjoy drawing!
Btw, don't ask me what I was doing in church. Ahem, drawing is my prayer.
Also, I'd express gratitude to your support of my facebook and instagram. People in publishing industry, Accessible Arts NSW, National Association for Visual Arts, fine artists, art lovers, Sydney Sketch Club, Urban Sketchers Sydney, Urban sketchers Australia visit my posts.

Reconnected & Sadami Update!

Hi, Friends, finally, the telephone company successfully registered the modem!! (My friend smiled at me, "...feel a miracle?" Oh, yes! Hallelujah!) Thank you for your great patience. Update, here we go!

Trade Picture Book & Education Picture Book
An education picture book project has come to me. A time frame is very tight (*This week is a due for "black & white roughs.") A book will assess children's reading ability. Very interesting from a linguistic view. Uni professors and linguists really celebrate this achievement and encourage me so much. Already, Editor is happy with my work and wants me to illustrate another project. We'll work together onward. I'm very happy!!

I have a dream. In education picture books, I'd advocate disadvantaged children/adults and tackle other social issues. Next year, my trade picture book will be published. My another dream is to do a book launch at uni. I'll invite you and uni lecturers who have cheered me up.

Life Drawing & New Techniques
We had a wonderful time in a class(*self-directed). The uploaded work is very the last one (A2) in 15 minutes. Each model's face expression quite interests me.
I've explored new techniques such as putting a paint first. Very much fun(see below, A2, 5 minutes). Although I still cannot get well how to create value without drawing, I'll keep up in a next term.
A challenging spirit is essential to grow as an artist.

Happy Easter! --- Miracle Baby
I was thinking over life and death in front of our church after the service. A second service was going on. One lady was holding a girl baby at an entrance, which made me smile.
"This is a miracle baby," the lady proudly said. It puzzled me.
"Her mother has cancer. At the 5th month, doctors recommended her to give up a baby. But she never and gave a birth. She has a strong faith." Wow...the mother was just in the service!! It touched me so much (as you know, recently, I lost the friend.)
The little girl looked so cute and often smiled back at me. I shed tears.

I feel this paradox ; always hope stays with us as long as we can trust in hope.  That story inspired me so much. Based on it, I'll make an image soon.

Special Thanks For Supporters
Now, I'm reconnected to internet or civilisation. I was out of society for these four weeks from 5th March, no joke.
The telephone company and me enjoyed a last chat. They put a credit on my account (my internet use will be free next month). Happy ending. But I hope it will never happen on me! Never, ever!

A funny bonus. An Internet cafe manager says, "Oh, I miss you!" (It seems he hardly comes across an illustrator?!) Hahaha, I'll pop up there to have a chat with him from now on! Librarians at public libraries have always cheered me up at the tough time.
Thank you for supporters and visitors for this blog.

These days, the projects occupy me too much. If I cannot update a post regularly, please pardon me. But certainly, I'll visit your blogs! Thank you for your wonderful friendship. Have a wonderful week!

Friends, Happy Painting!!

Sketches of Spring & 9/11 Church Concert

Hi, Friends, are you enjoying your life fully?
Now, we're getting into spring. I enjoy sketching in lovely sunshine and b
reezes. I upload the most recent sketches.
*I'm very busy with the project. A bit hard to find time to write a blog post. Please turn a blind eye to my messy writing.

First,
Sydney sketch club went to "Festival of Wind" or the kite festival at Bondi beach on Sunday. Many colourful kites were flying. The most impressive ones were big whales. In this work, I played around "washes" and examined colours to make "clouds" in the sky. In colour use, I do not use already-made black, but make it with other 3 colours.

New South "Whale"s in the Sky
Friends, I'm living in "New South Wales"

Second, these sketches were made at church. An American friend invited me for their little concert in the evening of September 11. Simple and not professionals. But their faith and enthusiasm shone through. We prayed together. I pray for the involved people with the day. (I remember... I rang up all my American friends in Sydney and sent emails to my friends in the States. Least forget.)

Church Concert 9/11 evening
I chose the very limited pallete and explored how to depict scenes. Particularly, contrast was enhanced. Regarding brush strokes, in my eyes, the simpler/the less, the better.Third, I sketched this young lady. Her smile reminds me of a spring breeze, which tickled me, too. She and her parents were at the Botanical Garden. I quickly sketched her. Her mother was the portratist. It's a small world. In Sydney, we are having many events to celebrate spring, even through many blog friends are getting into autumn or fall. A bit strange, when I think of a season. Well, let us enjoy our time.
Now, pardon me. I've got to get back to the project!!
Have a wonderful week and happy painting.
