World Book & Copyright Day

Hi, Friends, did you have a wonderful weekend?
Now, 23 April is the World Book & Copyright Day set by UNESCO.
I'll chat over pros and cons of E children picture books.

E books, in general, have many advantages -- more compact, light weight, economic than printed books and accessable at anywhere and from all over the world. However, in disadvantages, E books lack human interactions and without computers or pads, people cannot access E books.

Regarding children's picture books, I love printed books more. Probably, the most beauty of print books is sweet human interactions between children and readers(= care givers). We stay together and enjoy books. Great joys are touching pictures in pages, smelling a book etc, etc, sensing a books on a parent's lap. Not only touching a book, also we feel, touch our bodies, warmths and love, hearing voices! Talking of human relation, printed picture books often become gifts of love between family and relative members. Of course, human interactions could be possible by E books. But in an art phase, a small screen is equivocal to appreciate pictures. Another concern is appropriate page turning timing. When we, illustrators create a book, book design always accounts page turning with the real sounds of text reading out. It's uncertain that E books's page turning displays what an illustrator means to show in an information flow. Or, I should say, can young readers fully enjoy page turning in E books?
But today, society is moving toward digitisation more and more. E books beat hard cover books in many points. Take a public library for an example. A same budget takes more E books than print ones. E books save space on shelves. Moreover, any procedures over a counter are not necessary. A trip to a library does not bother users any more. Overdued E books are simply access denied by libraries. Also, fonts are easily enlarged, which is helpful for readers who need help. So, E books save time, money and space, and very accessible for users such as people with disabilities and in countrysides.

Besides the E books's strengths, in reality, babies are born with computers and mobile phones. Kids are growing up with computers whilst playing around with them. I wonder only me have sentiments for old printed books, particularly, for children picture books...? They might become fossils in a museum ...and, gulp, for school excursion in the future...? Sigh.

What do you think, Friends? Let me hear your throughs. Anyway, a book is a little universe, and probably, one of our most precious inventions on the earth.

BTW, I'm very busy with the education picture book project in a tight schedule, while I'm having a fun in colour roughs for the trade picture book. Editors and famous illustrators encourage me very much.
Friends, thanks for cheers and pardon me, if I should not upload a blog post regularly.
Anyway, Friends, Happy Painting!!

Thank you, Onera! Yeah, but not easy. Sooner or later, or already society has moved to E books. I must adapt myself to them.

¡Muchas gracias! Ah, hermosa expresión, "el libro impreso tiene un alma". Pero tarde o temprano, o ya la sociedad ha movido a E books. Esta es la realidad que yo debo adaptarme a ellos como ilustrador.

      Hi, Jose,
Thank you very much! Ah, lovely expression, "printed book has a soul." But sooner or later, or already society has moved to E books. This is the reality that I must adapt myself to them as an illustrator.

  3. delightful sketches and a very interesting post! I did not know about 'page turning timing' ! I do know children enjoy e-books too --I have seen a few interactive books that are lots of fun too. I think, main thing is to read and share with child the books -e or otherwise, no?

    1. Hi, Meera,
Thank you. Yes, like you said, I'm not going to judge E books in a simple way. I do not dictomise the world. Probably, right now, publishing industry is seeking the best solution and find a place to settle down. See how it goes.
      Kind regards, Sadami

  5. I read a lot of ebooks and love them because they are always available no matter where I am. On the other hand, I also read 'real' books and love them also. I think people can have a wonderful time with both.
    Love these sketches.
    Good luck with your 'assignment'.

  8. Oh, I still buy "real" books, bound and ready to crack open and read and enjoy. I never leave a book turned down but open so it cracks the spine. I never write in a book (other than my name on the front cover if I intend to keep it). I love books. I just can't get into reading books on a digital reader - it's not the same in any way. I guess I'm old-fashioned. I have found that books are not as closely or well edited as they used to be - even the big name authors have bad grammar mistakes (like too many "to's" in a string or a word missing or the wrong word - there instead of their. What has happened to editors? No time to read a book carefully and make good changes?
As for children's books, I cannot imagine sitting down to read a book to a child on a computer or e-reader. Kids need to point and touch and feel a book, I think. Just my opinion, though - will our great-grandchildren even know what a book is?

Have a wonderful week, dear friend!

    1. Dear friend Rhonda,
Oh, I have a feeling, we were grown up in a close time?! I'm old-fashioned, too. Yes, a great-grandkids generation might not know what book is...
BTW, your sharp eye on writings fascinates me so much! Although I'm not a native English speaker, we studied such sort of stuff in linguistics and argued them seriously -- called, "syntax" and "morphology." (*always, students start it from English and move onto any language all over the world). But also, we studied changing and continuity of language. Today, if Chaucer should write an essay at uni, could he get HD? .•*•♫°•♫·.•ʚ(ˆ◡ˆ)ɞ
You, too, have a wonderful week!!!
      Cheers, wink, wink, Sadami

  9. I love the written word. I don't care how people read it - on a computer, on a e-reader or in printed fashion. Reading is the most important thing.
I own paper books and an e-reader.
For art and instructional books, for children's books, I find paper best.
For reading novels I prefer my e-reader. For reading blogs, my computer.
Everything has a place, I think.

  10. I share your concern about the demise of the paper book. I really love to pick up a book and hold it in my hands. One of my earliest memories was being given the opportunity to choose my own hardbound book to purchase at a book fair when I was a little girl. I couldn't decide! Finally, I decided on "Cinderella" and I wore out the pages...looking at the illustrations. Books and pictures are so wonderful! I feel lucky to know a talented artist named Sadami who will always fill pages (whatever kind) with humanity and joy!

The projects occupy me, but very happy. My dream is to bring people love, hope and dream by my picture books!

    1. Hi, Jane, thank u for sharing the wonderful story. Very happy to know your children are bilingual. Every 4 weeks, one language is vanishing from the earth(*neither a joke nor play up. A very well-known fact in linguistics. I support bi/multi lingualism). Keep two languages for your children, please.
Jane, imagine. Your children have two different windows in a house and can enjoy this world beautifully! Yey!! Your children will have rich and wonderful mental activities ʚ(ˆ◡ˆ)ɞ!
Regarding children picture books, illustrators and involved people's hard work has been hardly known. Talking of e picture books, they are on the way. I'm learning lots and studying more.
      Cheers, Sadami
